CPT’s editorial panel worked closely with the CDC and the CMS to create these codes.  The code release includes two different vaccine products and two sets of unique administration codes—one for each vaccine.

As per details, these newly announced CPT codes will allow healthcare providers to report and track the administration of these COVID-19 vaccines. In addition to this,  another major purpose of this early release is to aware the healthcare providers. So they can update their billing and medical record systems before the public availability of this vaccine.  Moreover, these codes would be available after the approval of an emergency use authorization from the Food and Drug Administration.

The new vaccine codes are:

  • 91300 (Pfizer): Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative-free, 30 mcg/0.3mL dosages, diluent reconstituted, for intramuscular use

Each vaccine product code is linked with a pair of vaccine administration codes, which correspond to the first and second doses.
